10,000 Plastic Shopping Bags I Found Littered On The Ground
PICKING UP 10,000 PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS
BY JARED SIX
I Live in the "United States" in the state of "Ohio" and although a lot of people in "Ohio" go "Deer Hunting" in the winter I devoted this past winter to hunting for plastic shopping bags that were littered throughout the environment instead.
I started by simply going around and collecting all of the bags that were in plane sight, such as bags that were littered along the sidewalks in my neighborhood, but then I started going behind abandoned buildings, under bridges, and into the woods, and I didn't stop until I collected 10,000 bags!
Fun Fact: The average plastic shopping bag only weighs 5 grams, but 10,000 of them weighs a little over 100 pounds!
But please keep in mind that due to the fact that a plastic bag weighs practically nothing, if it is left outdoors all it can take is some wind for it to start moving (or even start flying) and there is no telling where it could eventually end up.
Almost every one of the 10,000 bags that I found had a small warning on them saying that they were a choking hazard for young children, but not one of them mentioned the fact that they are also a choking hazard for wildlife and that countless animals die every year due to these bags somehow ending up in nature.
Some of the bags that I found still had a receipt in them, and some times it would say that the customer just bought something small like a candy bar, an energy drink, or a pack of cigarettes.
Giving a customer a bag when they are purchasing something that small seemed so unnecessary and so wasteful to me that it kept making me think of when the comedian "Mitch Hedberg" was talking about whenever he's walking down the street and someone hands him a flyer...
- It's kind of like they're saying, "Here, you throw this away!"
There are 10,000 plastic shopping bags in the picture above, and for anyone curious, below is a list of every store that I found bags from, as well as the number of bags I found from each store, and even a picture of all the bags I found from each store... (And you won't believe how old some of these bags are!)
